CoreSync.exe is normally a legitimate Adobe Creative Cloud process called Adobe Content Synchronizer. It handles cloud documents, fonts, libraries, and other synchronized assets. The filename alone does not prove a running copy is safe, though. A genuine copy should open from Adobe’s CoreSync folder and carry a valid Adobe digital signature. Do not delete it just because it keeps running or briefly uses CPU. If it runs from a user folder, Temp, Downloads, or another unexpected location, treat that copy as suspicious and investigate it before allowing it to continue.

What is CoreSync.exe?

Adobe now calls CoreSync the Adobe Content Synchronizer. The component synchronizes data between the computer and a Creative Cloud account, including cloud documents, fonts, and Creative Cloud Libraries.[1] This is why it can remain active when Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, or the visible Creative Cloud window is closed.

CoreSync is not the same as every other Adobe background process. CCXProcess.exe supports Creative Cloud experience features and startup workflows, while AdobeCollabSync.exe belongs to Acrobat shared-review and collaboration functions. Closing one process does not necessarily stop the others.

It is also not a Windows system file. Windows can run normally without CoreSync, but Adobe features that depend on synchronized files, libraries, or fonts may not. That distinction matters when deciding whether to disable the component: optional for Windows does not mean useless or malicious.

Why does CoreSync.exe keep running?

Closing an Adobe editing app ends the visible work session, not necessarily the Creative Cloud services behind it. CoreSync may still check account state, finish an upload, synchronize a cloud document, or update a font or library. A legitimate process can therefore return after you end it manually, especially when Creative Cloud starts with Windows.

Recurrence becomes a troubleshooting signal when the process immediately returns with sustained CPU, disk, or network use and there is no active sync. Before changing anything, open Task Manager, select Details, right-click CoreSync.exe, and choose Open file location. Repeat the check for every instance rather than assuming they all point to the same file.

If the path and publisher are correct, the likely problem is a stuck or damaged Adobe component. If the path is wrong, recurrence may come from a startup entry, scheduled task, service, bundled application, or another process that relaunches the copy.

When is CoreSync.exe high CPU normal?

Adobe says folder synchronization can briefly use CPU, but CoreSync should not keep affecting performance while the computer is idle.[3] A short spike while a large file, font collection, or library changes is different from a process that stays near the top of Task Manager after synchronization has stopped.

  • Wait and observe when CPU rises only during visible Creative Cloud synchronization and drops afterward.

  • Investigate as suspicious when high CPU comes from a different folder, an unknown publisher, an invalid signature, or a computer with no expected Adobe installation.

CPU percentage by itself is not a malware verdict. A genuine process can malfunction, and a malicious copy can stay quiet. Combine behavior with location, signature, installed-product context, and the event that preceded the problem.

How to verify the genuine CoreSync.exe

  1. Open the file location. Adobe’s current Windows guidance identifies C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Sync\CoreSync as the genuine folder.[2] Check the complete path, not only the final folder name.
  2. Check the digital signature. Right-click CoreSync.exe, open Properties, and select Digital Signatures. The signature should be valid and identify Adobe as the publisher. Publisher wording can vary between builds, so validate the signature status rather than matching one string from a screenshot.
  3. Check every instance. Adobe advises checking all file locations if Task Manager shows more than one CoreSync.exe process.[2] One genuine instance does not validate another file with the same name.
  4. Confirm the product context. Creative Cloud or an Adobe application should be installed. A CoreSync.exe that appeared after a crack, fake update, unrelated download, or unknown installer deserves more scrutiny.

Do not use file size or the familiar Adobe name as the deciding factor. Both can change across updates, and malware can copy a filename and icon. Folder, signature, and launch context are stronger evidence.

How to fix a legitimate CoreSync.exe using high CPU

  1. Let active synchronization finish. Save open work and confirm that Creative Cloud is not uploading or downloading a large asset.
  2. End the process once. In Task Manager, end the verified Adobe CoreSync.exe instance, then reopen Creative Cloud. This is a reversible test, not a permanent fix.
  3. Update Creative Cloud. Install current Adobe updates and restart Windows. Recheck the process only after the system is idle.
  4. Repair the desktop app. Adobe’s current Creative Cloud desktop uninstaller offers Repair before Uninstall.[4] Use Repair first and verify that local files have finished syncing before any uninstall.
  5. Retest the same path. After repair and restart, confirm that Task Manager opens the same signed Adobe folder and that CPU falls after synchronization.

Avoid downloading a replacement CoreSync.exe from an EXE or DLL download site. Repair or reinstall the Adobe component through Adobe’s official workflow so the file, dependencies, and signature stay together.

Can you disable CoreSync.exe safely?

You can stop CoreSync for a reversible test, but disabling it can interrupt Creative Cloud file synchronization, cloud documents, fonts, or libraries. If you actively use those features, pausing synchronization or repairing the app is safer than deleting the executable.

If you no longer use Creative Cloud, remove the Adobe apps and desktop component through their official uninstallers. Do not rename or delete the signed file inside Program Files; manual deletion can leave services, startup items, and repair records behind while breaking updates.

On a work or school computer, do not change Adobe startup behavior without checking policy. Managed installations may restore required components automatically, and the recurrence is not evidence of malware when the path and signature remain valid.

What to do if CoreSync.exe is in the wrong folder

  1. Disconnect from the network if the process is also opening connections, downloading files, showing fake prompts, or causing other compromise symptoms.
  2. Record the path and publisher before ending the suspicious instance. This helps distinguish it from the legitimate Adobe copy.
  3. End only the wrong-path process. Do not delete the genuine Adobe folder while a second copy is under investigation.
  4. Scan the file and the computer. A local scan should check the executable, its parent folder, startup entries, scheduled tasks, services, bundled apps, and other persistence—not only the visible process name.
  5. Review recent changes. Remove an unknown installer, crack, fake update, or bundled application that appeared before the process. Check Startup apps and Task Scheduler for an entry pointing to the suspicious path.
  6. Reboot and scan again if the process returns. A recurring copy means the launcher or persistence mechanism has not been removed.

A wrong-path process may be only the visible component.
