An A_Navi.exe – System Error message saying MAXKERNL.dll was not found means a program could not load a required library. It does not tell you whether the installation is safe. Before repairing anything, find the actual A_Navi.exe file and the command that starts it. A known application may need repair; software you removed may have left a startup entry; an unfamiliar installation needs a security check. Do not download MAXKERNL.dll or restore a quarantined copy just to make the message disappear.
What does the A_Navi.exe error actually mean?
The filename in the window title identifies the application reporting the failure. The DLL named in the message identifies a dependency it could not load. Those are two different files: MAXKERNL.dll missing does not mean A_Navi.exe itself is missing. The executable may still be present and keep failing every time a startup command launches it.
There is a legitimate software connection worth checking, but it is not a verdict on your file. The HijackLibs research catalog documents maxkernl.dll in Nuance PaperPort and lists PPScanMg.exe as a program that can load it. It does not identify every executable named A_Navi.exe as PaperPort. If you use scanner or document-management software, compare the file with that installation instead of assuming the name proves its origin. [1]
The same catalog describes a security risk when the documented application loads an untrusted copy of the library. That is a reason to verify the whole installation before supplying the missing piece—not evidence that this happened on your PC. An error window alone also does not establish Navi RAT; use that response guide only if a detection or reliable analysis actually identifies that malware.
Find the file and the command that starts it
First note when the window appears: immediately after sign-in, when opening a particular app, or repeatedly while you work. Save the complete error text. If it began after an unknown installer ran, or you also see fresh security alerts or account abuse, disconnect that PC from the network while investigating and use a clean device for sensitive accounts.
- Look for the actual file. Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. If A_Navi.exe is present under Details, right-click it and choose Open file location. Do not launch the file to reproduce the problem. A program that fails quickly may already have exited, so its absence from Task Manager does not settle the case.
- Record its identity. In File Explorer, open the file’s Properties. Note its complete folder, product/company details and the Digital Signatures tab if present. Compare those details with installed software and the installer you used. A familiar folder or valid signature is helpful context; neither proves that every neighboring component is trustworthy. An absent signature needs investigation, not an automatic malware label.
- Find the launch source. Check Task Manager → Startup apps for the matching entry. If it is missing or the displayed name is vague, use Microsoft Autoruns to locate the exact executable name or path. Autoruns lists additional launch locations and can open an entry’s properties or location. Save the entry name, complete command and startup location before changing it. [2]
- Read the complete command. In a scheduled task, inspect its Actions, including the program and arguments. If the command starts
cmd.exe, PowerShell or another interpreter, the target in its arguments matters too. Do not delete the Windows interpreter. The suspicious startup apps checklist covers the other startup locations and what to leave alone.
A location such as %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp or %USERPROFILE%\Downloads is a clue to investigate, not a confirmed A_Navi.exe installation path. The useful comparison is whether the file, publisher, parent app and launch command all fit software you intended to install.
If the installation is unfamiliar, removing only a broken library can leave its launch command or another unwanted component behind. A recurring task or bundled module may need attention even after the visible file is quarantined. A wanted application is damaged
Use this branch when the path, publisher and installed parent application agree, you recognize the installation, and there is no unresolved security detection. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and look for the app’s repair option, if offered. Traditional desktop programs may instead provide Repair or Change in Control Panel → Programs and Features. Not every app supports repair. [3]
If repair is unavailable, obtain the correct installer from the application’s official vendor or your device manufacturer’s support page. Back up the app’s documents and settings before reinstalling. Then test the application and restart Windows once. Do not fetch a standalone DLL, run random regsvr32 commands or add antivirus exclusions. You removed the app, but its startup entry remains
Confirm that the entry points to the software you removed. Disable that one entry in Startup apps, or uncheck its box in Autoruns, then restart. Disabling is a reversible test; it does not uninstall the program or remove malware. Leave unrelated entries alone.
If the message stops and the software is no longer needed, finish any remaining uninstall through the application’s normal route. Remove a confirmed orphan only after saving its exact details. An Autoruns missing-file warning can help locate a stale command, but verify which file is absent: a missing executable and an executable missing its DLL need different repairs.
The installation is unknown or a security tool detected a threat
Keep detected components quarantined. Review applications installed around the time the error began and uninstall only an identified unwanted parent app. Complete the scan and any requested restart, then inspect the same launch source again. Avoid deleting entire AppData folders, all Run values or every file containing “Navi.” That can damage unrelated software without finding the source.

Why does A_Navi.exe return after a restart or clean scan?
Compare the evidence you saved before cleanup with what exists now. The same-looking pop-up can reflect different outcomes:
- The identical error returns, with no new detection: another launch point may still call the same incomplete program, or the wanted app still needs repair. Check the command and file presence before concluding malware returned.
- A disabled entry is recreated or a new file/detection appears: record the new path, command and alert time. Another component may be restoring it. Keep an affected machine isolated and ask a trusted technician to trace the creator rather than repeatedly deleting the visible entry.
- The entry stays disabled and the error stops: the startup symptom is resolved. Test any wanted parent application separately. If an untrusted program ran or accounts showed abuse, finish those recovery steps even though the window is gone.
The goal is to identify what asks Windows to launch A_Navi.exe and resolve that source. A quiet desktop after one restart is a useful check; it is not a reason to restore an unknown DLL.
