A shipping rebate can look like money coming back from an order. A September 25 investigation by Malwarebytes shows why some ShipmentsFree customers instead notice a recurring bill: the rebate offer belongs to a separate paid membership. The report describes customers questioning monthly $25 charges they did not remember authorizing.
ShipmentsFree’s current terms confirm automatic renewal, but say the applicable price and trial period are disclosed at registration. The reported $25 charge is therefore not a universal current price. An unfamiliar charge needs to be traced to the actual enrollment record.
The shipping promise and the billing relationship are different
The researchers found several shipping-themed domains with similar account pages, policy wording and support details. In particular, freeshpmts[.]com and shipmentsfreezone[.]com led to an account page using the ShipmentFree name. That helps explain a recognition problem: the offer someone remembers and the name they later investigate may differ.
The distinction is visible in the service’s own description. ShipmentsFree sells membership access to rebates; it does not deliver the parcel. Its terms identify Smarty, LLC as the operator and describe the retailer as an independent third party. Completing a shopping order and joining a rebate program are separate decisions, even when they happen close together.
This is also different from a fake store that takes payment for nonexistent goods. A real service can still generate a dispute over what a customer understood and agreed to. The published complaints are evidence of customer concerns, not a court finding of fraud.
A rebate claim does not stop automatic renewal
Under the terms dated July 28, a trial becomes a monthly subscription unless canceled before it expires. Claiming money back is a separate process requiring a qualifying purchase and supporting documentation. The practical consequence is easy to miss: waiting for a rebate is not the same action as canceling membership.
The terms list the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand as the service area. Subscription fees are processed in US dollars, including for members abroad. Readers elsewhere should not assume that an offer makes them eligible for rebates.
Trace the charge, then handle cancellation and refunds separately
Start with the transaction date, exact statement descriptor and enrollment confirmation. Compare the membership’s recorded price and renewal date with the offer you saved. If you dispute enrollment, ask the provider for the sign-up date and consent record; the brand name alone cannot settle whether a particular charge was authorized.
The company’s cancellation guide directs members to their account’s Membership tab and its cancellation control, followed by an email confirmation. The newer terms also list account, email and telephone routes. They say the subscriber must initiate the request and may be asked to verify their identity; do not assume that a third-party cancellation tool has completed it.
Keep the confirmation and check subsequent statements. Cancellation stops the subscription going forward; a refund is a separate request, and the company says it considers eligible requests individually. If you do not recognize the enrollment or charges continue after cancellation, contact your card issuer through its official app or the number on your card to discuss the transaction. No refund outcome is guaranteed.
The useful test for the next rebate offer is specific: identify the membership price, the renewal date and the cancellation route before providing payment details. The amount offered back on a purchase does not answer those questions.
